CT Institutes' Original 800cc Bike:
Others envy, owner’s pride
In an addition to set another
milestone in the technical education the students and staff of CT
Group of Institutions, Jalandhar designed an 800 cc bike with their
own imagination and creativity. This bike is unique in its features
because of its design and power.
Manpuneet Singh, Manpreet Singh,
Surinder Singh & Jaspreet Singh from Department of Mechanical
Engineering took the initiative of this project under the guidance
of Mr. Arvind Birdi (HoD Department of Mechanical Engineering). The
students and staff gave credit of their hard work to the worthy
Chairman S. Charanjit Singh Channi and Managing Director Mr. Manbir
Singh, who encouraged them by giving financial and psychological
support. The CT Group of Institutions always encourages young and
bright ideas of the students to implement the knowledge in to
reality.

Fabrication and recycling seems to
be in trend amongst the CTIEMT students. A group of final year
students of B. Tech Mechanical Engineering Batch 2004 modified and
fabricated the already self-made 800cc bike, with the help of the
faculty and the management. These sports-bike enthusiasts worked day
and night on this project taking up a challenge to aim at the best
performance bike powered with an 800cc Maruti car engine. The bike
runs 25 to 27kms per litre, which definitely speaks loud and clear
about the performance.
Speaking at the occasion Chairman
S. Charanjit Singh Channi told media persons that "The bike was
first made by a diploma student from CT Polytechnic. The bike is
powered by a Maruti 800cc car engine and is mostly made from used
recycled parts from various other makes of motorbikes. Initially
when the bike was made by the diploma student, number of problems
surfaced in the running of the bike. The chassis was unstable, the
bike overall wasn’t balanced properly. The bike was difficult to
steer si
nce
the handle wasn’t properly designed. Transmission system needed
overhauling. Lot of work had to be done on the engine to bring it
back to life. The stability, safety and performance of the bike were
the main issues. "
The bike in that condition was
handed over to the final year B. Tech Mechanical Engineering
students. They took it as a challenge to get it in the best running
condition. The chassis was redesigned from scratch. The frame and
the chassis was made of GI pipe which was not very stable, but the
material used for the new bike was different, to have more strength
and durability. The chassis was shortened in length to give it more
stability. The initial length of the bike was 2.75m but its 1.94m in
length after the completion. To give further stability, the height
was also reduced from 630mm to 590mm. Having more stable structure,
the vibrations were reduced to a great extent. Even the exhaust used
earlier was just a pipe but now a proper exhaust muffler was used.
This helped in reducing the noise level and less polluting. The rear
tyre and wheel was specifically selected for more stability and
traction to the road.
The brakes didn’t work effectively
with the older version of the bike, but the new brakes were properly
installed and worked better, which gives the bike more safety. The
suspension system is also modified in the new bike. Due to bulky
structure of the older version, the front suspension, taken from
Yamaha, was not able to withstand the load very effectively. The
front suspension was changed to that of Enfield Bullet.
In the cooling system, the radiator
was taken from Maruti 800cc car, but due to the big size of the
radiator, it had to be cut down to accommodate and also to solve its
purpose of cooling the engine. The main problems faced during the
making of this bike were with the engine and the transmission
system. Firstly, the engine was old and it had to be brought back to
the working condition. It took long hours for days to overhaul the
complete engine and bring it back in shape and which was
successfully done. Secondly, since initially the gear box was taken
from Yamaha 350cc bike, which we had to use due to the
non-availability of any other gear box, the gear box was old and
worn out, so the amount of man-hours put into the working of gear
box was accountable, the chain sprocket on the rear wheel which
drives the bike was redesigned using the help of the faculty, and
after all the efforts, it was brought back into life and the whole
power unit was put together to make bike run on the road.
Prof. Manhar Arora Director -
Corporate Relations and Placements told "Since the inception of
engineering college in 2004 the students have developed five
different products which includes Bio- Diesel Jeep, Solar Lawn
Mower, Solar Electricity Panel, Indigenous car and now 800 cc bike.
This shows the quality and commitment of the staff and students for
the improvement of engineering education. For future we are working
on eco friendly automobile products which will contribute in saving
our environment."
On the success of the project, the
students were congratulated by the Chairman of CT Group of
Institutions, S. Charanjit Singh Channi, the Managing Director, Mr.
Manbir Singh, the Director, Dr. Paramjit Singh, the Deputy Director,
S. Sukhjinder Singh, and the Dean Academics. Mr. Matiana Director
Corporate Relations and Placements, Prof. Manhar Arora and the
management of CT Group of Institutions.

running vehicle from used thrown away parts, or to sum it up,
“recycle’. Mr. Varun Saini, a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering
student of CT Institute of Engineering, Management & Technology,
Jalandhar an automobile enthusiast, started working on this idea and
couldn’t stop until he had it running successfully on the road.
The name,
“Blitz”, came up as a tribute to the spirit of the team members
involved in this project. The whole credit goes to Mr. Varun Saini
for this project, with the help and guidance of the faculty as well
as the management of CTIEMT.
Blitz is one
assembly of parts and jigs put together from different cars. The
best part of this is that they all fit together as if they were
never apart.
The chassis was
designed by Mr. Varun Saini with the help of the faculty. The
chassis was designed using the design software Pro-E and the
designing was done in-house in the departmental Computer Graphics
Lab. The chassis is a solid bar cross section and has a tapered
shape, with the front wheel base of 29 inchs and rear wheel base of
39 inchs, to suit the design of the car. The suspension system
chosen was modest using leaf springs for both rear and front
suspension. The front leaf springs were taken from a three-wheeler
and rear leaf springs are from the Omni van. The leaf springs are
used as suspension in heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, but
due to a tight budget, the leaf springs were the best option for
this project. The chassis and the suspension system are mounted on
front and rear rigid axle. The front axle is from Mahindra Jeep and
the rear axle was taken from Omni van.
The body used
for this car was of Fiat Uno. Now why Fiat Uno? This is because it
was not about choices in the first place. The project started with a
thought that since the common thought goes that the junkyard is full
of useless parts lying waste, this waste can be made of some use or
of full use by putting them together and making them work. So the
available so-called junk was made to use and put together.
The Fiat Uno’s
body was a perfect match to the chassis. The head lights and the
taillight were taken from Sonalika’s Rhino. The front bumper is also
Rhino’s, but the rear bumper is from Zen.
The engine, of
course, was picked up from junkyard. An old, dilapidated Omni van
800cc 3-cylinder engine was the major hurdle in this project. It
took quite some time to overhaul the engine and bring it to the
running condition. After long hard hours the engine was brought to
life and mounted. The gear box of the Omni van had to be modified
since the engine in an Omni van is inside the driver’s cabin. But
for this setup, the engine was to be placed outside the driver’s
cabin. Thus the gear box and transmission had to be modified to suit
our design requirements. The 4-speed transmission has different gear
shifting positions than what we find in our common cars. Due to
these modifications, the length of the propeller shaft had to be
increased to 65 inchs, which is longer than the normal length.
Before the body
and the frame were mounted, chassis, alongwith the engine and
transmission were tested on the road for couple of months. Apart
from a few hitches, this rigorous testing proved fruitful.
Steering system,
taken from Maruti Gypsy, is the worm and worm wheel type. This type
of steering system is quite common in the automobiles on the road.
The usual
spacing in the Fiat Uno accommodates only five passengers, including
the driver. But Blitz, using the same Fiat Uno’s body accommodates
seven people, which shows the maximum utilization of space. The
front five seats were taken from Rhino and the rear two seats were
self designed.
Fuel tank, 36
litres capacity, was taken from Omni. The exhaust which normally
runs to the back of the car, with this design, is placed at the left
side below the rear passenger door. The reason being that since the
fuel tank was placed at the rear, it was not technically possible to
place the exhaust pipe below the fuel tank. The heat at the exhaust
could prove fatal if it was to be placed below the fuel tank. Thus
the exhaust pipe was placed as far as possible from the fuel tank.
Now the cap of the fuel tank was taken from Hindustan Ambassador.
Since the body and the fuel tank are both from different makes and
designs, it was difficult to find a match for the fuel tank cap that
could fit properly to the design of the body and the fuel tank.
Eventually, the fuel tank cap of Ambassador solved the purpose.
The wiring used
for the electrical circuits were taken from Maruti 800cc car. The
speedometer wire used for Blitz was taken from Rhino.
The footrests
used for climbing into the car for the passengers at the side of the
car were taken from Tata Sumo. Tata Sumo’s ignition switch was also
fitted into the Blitz. The accelerator pedal was taken from Fiat Uno
and the other pedals, brakes and clutch, were from Omni van. The
interior comprising the dashboard and the glove compartment were
taken from Fiat Uno.
